Putting a recorder on your subject

- Now, when it comes time to actually recording the sound, one of the key things that's important is that you get the mic as close as possible to your subject. - Um hmm. - Now, we're going to talk about the cell phone. But a lot of times, you know, there's these dedicated audio recorders that we often have in our bags too. - Yep. - Well, you know, off-camera here, I'm recording on a smart phone. I can still tuck this closer, and that's going to be within proximity. It's going to sound a little hollow. But if a microphone is within two, three feet, it's not bad, right? - Yeah, that's right. I mean, so the closer you can get it to the subject, you're going to minimize your overall room tone and room noise in the recording. Again, you want to kind of balance this idea out about proximity towards visibility. Generally speaking, we don't want to see contraptions on set to make it feel, well they're recording this guy, right? You want to kind of have that be invisible. So think about that…
