Racking focus

Racking focus

- Another commonly seen film-making trick is that of racking focus. A rack focus is when something in the shot is in focus and then focus shifts to something else. This trick is typically done with the more shallow depth of field so that the rack focus is obvious. If everything is in focus or even close to being in focus, this effect might be missed. In the original version of The Assurance, the bulk of the film was going to be a flashback in the mind of Korda'a, which started with her wandering and then showed her with the fish at the spit. We rack focus from Korda'a to the fish and then faded into her memories in flashback. Later in the film, after the goodbye scene, we would fade back to the spit scene and then rack focus back to Korda'a. It was a visual way of showing Korda'a drifting back into her memory and then coming back to her senses in the present again. We also did a rack focus in the night scene.
