Rethinking the lighting

- Now, a lot of cinematographers might leave the image here. I mean, it's so much better, so let's just shoot, right? Well, on a real set, the first thing we probably would have done is to turn off the overhead lights. Overhead lights in a studio or in a building are really meant to light the space, not to be beautiful or tell a story. So we turned off the day light balance overhead lights, and I replaced these with a key light. I chose a warm, Tungsten Balance Fresnel for this. I also put a little but of diffusion on it to soften it a little bit. Looking at the footage in post, I wish I would have diffused it even more. Perhaps with a large silk. It's a really gorgeous shot that feels like the light wants to be even softer. I also lit her from behind her left side. If it would have come from behind her right side, it would've given her a halo. That might've looked pretty great as well, but her face would've been in shadow. So I preferred to put her hair in shadow and light the edge…
