Setting audio levels on your Mac

- Before you start to record, it's a good idea to check your audio levels. This usually involves a few steps, configuring your hardware placement, checking the settings in the computer and then recording some test audio and playing it back. You don't just want to skip a step here because it's very easy for things to go wrong. First step, we need to think about the microphone placement. Obviously, I've got a keyboard here so I need to balance it. But the mic I'm using is a little bit farther away. Sure, it could pick things up and I can aim it but I'm going to get better quality if I move it a bit closer to myself. Generally speaking, I say that a microphone should be about this far away. So if I place that between my lips and the mic, it's about right. Now this will vary slightly from microphone to microphone but different mics generally want to be in the six inches to 12 inch range away from the subject's mouth. Now I…
