Setting focus

- While you might be able to slightly sharpen a shot during post-production to bring back some edge detail, there is no real fix for out-of-focus video, so getting this right is pretty important. Let's take a look at doing it manually with a manual focus ring, as well as using the auto-focus features if you're using a still camera type lens. Now I'm leaving the displays up here so it's easier to see what's in focus, but clearly our focus target here is out of focus. This sort of target is called a back focus target, or a Siemens star, and it's often used in industries to help check focus. It can be used for print or for video. So in this case, if we're focused at a distance of 100 feet, pretty out of focus. But as we move closer to the right distance here, the target comes into focus. You'll notice, depending as you get close, how that star has a little optical illusion of growing. This is one easy way to check for focus there when it essentially disappears and comes into focus.
