- Owning the interviewing process is often one of the most important parts of making a successful documentary film since so many docs use interviews as the bedrock of how information is conveyed. And there's a lot to consider about organizing, shooting, and conducting your interviews. Let's begin by talking about the look and feel of your interviews. Your interviews mise-en-scène. Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning put on stage but when applied to the film world, basically means what's in the frame. You, as the director, ultimately control everything that's in the frame and everything that's not in the frame. In a documentary, and particularly for the interviews, you'll need to define the mise-en-scène in terms of the subject, background, decor, objects, lighting, and more. So, first, a large part of what defines what's in the frame is determined by the setting in which you conduct the interviews.
