Shooting engaging observational scenes
- We just talked about shooting great b-roll. Now, we're going to talk about shooting footage a step further. Capturing rich observational footage is a lovely way to show a multifaceted scene play out either in conjunction with interview audio or with music or by simply standing alone. There are many documentaries that are entirely made of observational footage. They're called observational documentaries. I discussed the characteristics of observational docs as well as the other five different types or modes of documentary in my course, Introduction to Documentary Storytelling available in our library. So check that out for a deep discussion but for now, I want to touch on some basics of the observational style which we will use within the Project RELO film. Earlier, when we were discussing shooting b-roll of people, we touched on some aspects that I want to recount and flesh out more here.
