Shooting night scenes
- As you've heard me complain about many times, shooting at night is a real challenge. I hadn't done much of that before The Assurance simply because it usually requires a big crew to do well, and that tends to be expensive. So just like with avoiding artificial practical lights, I knew I had to have a big night scene so I could wrestle with that and talk about it in this training. Also, night scenes have the power to look absolutely stunning. I created a list here of five things, well, actually five and a half things, that could help you get better footage out of exterior night shots. First, you still need to get a proper exposure. One of the things I often see indie filmmakers do is just shoot with available light at night. This is almost always a bad idea. You still need to expose your shots properly even though it's a scene at night, and that requires a lot more light than daylight scenes do. Somehow, the night sky just eats up light.
