Shooting the opening title sequence
- I wanted to have a quick look here at how I shot the opening title sequence. I thought it was a fun little project, and it was a little unconventional, so I thought I would share. I was inspired by the way that the paint looked up close, when we painted this large mural for the castle scene. Also, when we settled on burlap for the wardrobe and then again on the set dressing, I kind of felt that burlap epitomized this entire world. So it made sense to me to have the opening title set in front of this material. The first thing I did was lay out the big mural on the floor. I decided that the beginning of the film should feel stark, and evoke the loneliness of Korda'a right from the outset. So I decided to light the mural with natural daylight, as opposed to warm constant lines. I opened the blinds and lit this only with incoming natural daylight. The burlap is mostly white and I wanted to use fast prime lenses to get a shallow depth of field. So we didn't really need too much light…
