- Would you go to a restaurant, order every appetizer on the menu, every entree, every dessert, every drink and when the food comes to the table, pick and choose what you really want to eat. Of course not, nobody does that. There's no way you can eat everything, but you still have to pay for all the food. Well, that's exactly what many people do when shooting video. They go out, shoot like crazy, fill hard drive and memory cards with stuff and then spend weeks and months going through all the footage trying to find what they really need. Shooting what you really need is called keeping a low shooting ratio. And the definition is pretty simple, if you have five hours of footage for one hour of final deliverables, you have a five to one shooting ratio, which is actually pretty standard for narrative work. A 25 to one shooting ratio, 25 hours of content for one hour of final deliverables is actually pretty standard…
