Social media strategies: YouTube

- More video is consumed on YouTube than any other social network. The statistics are staggering, and I guarantee whatever stats I spout off now will be old news by the time you're viewing this course, that's how quickly the platform grows by the day. But as of this recording, more than a billion hours of video are watched daily in 90 countries. The average time spent per session is 40 minutes and YouTube makes up over half of people's time watching online video. It also has the most variety in terms of video content compared to other social media networks. That is you can literally watch most anything you want, any content, any video type, any video length, anything. With that comes an incredibly diverse audience as well. So needless to say YouTube has an astounding reach, and if you've got a good video strategy you can have a lot of success, whether you have a personal or a business brand. That said, with all of that reach certainly comes potential challenges. And that is figuring out how you can get your video seen by the right audience. Because unlike Facebook and other newsfeed based platforms YouTube videos are often found when people enter key words to look for videos, so you need to poise yourself well if you want people to find your content and stick with you in the long run. For those reasons it's really important to really pin down your brand and your audience and your strategy. Most of the time that involves setting up a dynamic YouTube channel and creating consistent content that your audience will want to watch. In order to make sure that you're ready to deliver on those fronts, first research what YouTube channels your target audience is already subscribed to. Figure out how other YouTubers are engaging their followers and then see how you can successfully implement some of the same strategies, as well as how you can do things differently to fill potential holes. Many times success comes by being as niche as possible. Being niche will not only allow you to attract a demographic without a ton of built in competition, but it will allow you to show up higher in search results when someone searches by a particular set of keywords. Remember, many people who find your content won't know who you are, but if you can be listed near the top within keyword searches, and if people like what they see, they'll come back for more of what you can offer. Among your top content, try to have several very well executed educational videos because in terms of keyword searchable videos, tutorials and how to videos are huge. So those can be excellent gateways for showing your target audience who you are and what else you can deliver. You'll also want to try to be as interactive as possible in order to build a dynamic online community, not just on your own channel, but on other channels as well. Don't be afraid to hang out on other channels that cover similar topic areas as yours and engaging one. This can ultimately attract those people to your channel. Finally, just make sure you implement many of the tried and true techniques for good social media video strategy across the board. That is, focus on quality over quantity because quality videos are the types of videos that people will find and like and share, and in the end those are the videos that will help you grow your channel. And of course make sure that you adopt a regular and consistent posting frequency that your audience can trust and count on. As you build your channel, you'll use that consistent quality content as your foundation. And from there you'll be able to prompt discussions, create playlists and build those dynamic online communities. There are also things you'll want to do in terms of making your content rise to the top in terms of YouTube search algorithm, so be sure to label your videos with great titles that use search engine optimization best practices, tag your videos with good metadata. Doing this will not only let your video be better searched via YouTube but also Google. Also, enable embedding via the YouTube video manager so people can share your videos on a variety of sites, because when you put videos on YouTube you're almost always going to use YouTube as the home base for your content and share links via other social media platforms in order to drive your traffic there. So you want your videos to be as shareable as possible. So you want your videos to be as shareable as possible.
