Social networks vs. content platforms

- Something that I hear almost no one bring up is the difference between social networks and content platforms, and there are important distinctions even though they're similar. One of the things that I would tell you is the difference between a social network versus a content platform is the way that you communicate and engage. A primary example would be the fact that Instagram is purely a content platform, and I would say that Twitter is a social network where you can distribute content, but it is a pure social network. There are examples of platforms that are somewhere in between. But let's initially just focus on some of the main core differences between social networks and content platforms. Social networks, at their core, are about communication. Just like we communicate directly to people by making phone calls on our smartphone, we can use social network specifically to reach out and touch somebody.
