Sound considerations

- When scouting, we can really get sucked into the visual, but don't forget about the sound around you, 'cause you can get burned really quickly. Listen for sounds that may present a problem. Record room tone while you're there. That's why you have that smart phone. Determine if the HVAC can be controlled. A lot of times, your biggest sound is the air conditioning. Evaluate control via scheduling time of day. Remember, we're going to go on our location scout around the same time, but if your production, maybe you're shooting in a corporate office. If it's underneath the lunch room, you probably don't want to schedule your shoot for during that time. Also, it's good to check if there's any fire stations nearby. I have been affected by a fire station next door, and let's just say it added three hours to my shoot. Check to see if there's any hospitals. There's a lot of ambulances that come in and out with their sirens blaring around hospitals. Trains, train tracks, the horns, you're going to hear all that. Also check the flight paths. See if you're going to be interrupted by the planes going over every 10, 15 minutes. The more you can solve sound problems ahead of time on your location scout, the less interruptions you're going to have.
