Terms and concepts

- Before we get into strategy, I think there are a few important concepts and terms for you to know and I think this is going to just help you as we move forward in the lesson. Let's start with watch time. Watch time is the overall length of a video that a viewer is watching. Retention rate is the average length of a video that a viewer has watched. And retention rate is one of the most important metrics in YouTube specifically. Traffic sources. These are typically websites that are generating views for the videos themselves. These might be external websites, like Google, as a search engine, or a website that you've embedded a video on. They could also be social media websites. Subscribers, subscribers are a YouTube term. This is very similar to social media followers in other platforms and they represent people who prefer a channel's content and have made a commitment to it. Algorithms, this is the more complicated term and it's probably everyone's least favorite thing. Algorithms are computer programs that determine how a platform operates and usually the distribution of videos. Finally, SEO. SEO stands for search engine optimization. SEO is something that we do, as video creators or content creators, to try to make content accessible and discoverable in platforms like Google, which is a search engine. We want, essentially, a viewer to be able to have a question or type in a phrase and have our content be related to that phrase. So there's a lot of work that's done behind the scenes to make that happen. So, in a nutshell, that's what you can consider search engine optimization. These terms are important going forward because they're going to come up quite frequently throughout this course and I just hope that understanding this a little bit better doesn't make you feel intimidated by jargon or things of that nature. So now that you know the key terms that we're going to be discussing throughout this course, we can dive right in to video content strategy.
