Understanding ISO

- Your camera uses a rating to describe the sensitivity of the camera's sensor. Depending upon the model, it may use an ASA reference number or the more common ISO reference number. Essentially, as we change this number it affects the sensitivity, how much light the sensor is trying to gather. Now, as you increase this, you'll likely see an effect on noise or grain and you want to be careful not to overdo it. Let's take a look here at the pocket camera. Right now, you'll notice the shot is very underexposed and the ISO is reading at 100. We currently have the iris of the lens opened up most of the way. I can go down a little bit more to 1.8 but we still see the shot is pretty dark. Now some of this is thematically correct. It is a low light shot with some soft light behind and this diffuser here, but I may want to get some additional sensitivity without compromising and going quite as shallow on the depth of the field.
