- Deep fake technology operates on a sophisticated type of artificial intelligence, known as deep learning, where machines are able to teach themselves. Specifically, it relies on two different machine learning models working together. The first machine learning model trains on a dataset. And in the case of deep fake videos, that data set consists of a whole lot of available images of the target subject, featuring all sorts of different angles, expressions, and lighting scenarios. It then creates video forgeries from that data. Within this forgery process, the deep fake creator often needs to manually tweak the results to avoid some obvious artifacting and other image problems. The second machine learning model attempts to detect those forgeries, and the deep fake is created when those forgeries are no longer able to be detected as forgeries.
