Using a laptop

Using a laptop

- Okay, I've moved towards the back of the set, where, shortly, we'll be building our data management station. I'd like to talk about a few hardware options first. You're going to need some sort of device to manage the data. Chances are this is going to take the form of a laptop computer, although I have seen people take full work stations on set, if working with really beefy media types or formats like raw video. For most of you, a laptop will probably do the jobs. Now, ideally, that laptop is going to be fast and modern. It's going to want a good graphics processor, so you can easily play back footage in real time. In this case, I've got a newer MacBook Pro, but anything released in the last few years will likely work with most file formats these days. Make sure, though, that you test the machine before you get on set. The reason why you need that realtime playback is that, not only are you going to be copying data, but people may want to come over and watch you play some footage…
