Weather reports: METARs

- METAR is an acronym for Meteorological Terminal Aviation Routine Weather Report, or Meteorological Aerodrome Report. A METAR is an observation of current surface weather. Sometimes it is difficult to decipher what the METAR is communicating. However, if you keep in mind the type of information that is being conveyed, and the order in which it's given to you, you will quickly learn to read them without any problem. METARs are issued on a regularly scheduled basis unless significant weather changes have occurred. A special METAR can be issued at any time between routine METAR reports. You can see here an example of what a METAR looks like. Let's break down the following METAR. Starts with the word "METAR" to indicate the type of report. Then the location of the METAR, which says KLAX, this is the Los Angeles Airport. Now we see the date and time, which is the 12th day of the month at 1852 Zulu. Winds are at 250 at four…
