- Hi, I'm Ashley Kennedy. Thank you for joining me in the first of a series of three courses on making a documentary film. In this course, Planning and Pre-Production, I'll take you through the important steps necessary prior to shooting the documentary. In the second course, Production, we'll focus on the logistics of filming the documentary so you can get the most out of a well-planned and well-executed shoot. And the last course in the series is Editing and Post where we'll dive into the exciting process of editing the film. In each of these courses, we'll be working toward the goal of making a documentary about an organization called Project RELO, a non-profit with a mission to help solve veteran under employment issues by bringing business leaders and military veterans together in unique and challenging ways. The leaders of Project RELO are our clients, so we'll get the opportunity to talk about what it takes to make a film for someone else while exercising our own creative vision. And specifically, in this course, we'll touch on how to generate and cultivate story ideas, and how to craft an effective pitch and proposal. We'll go into research strategies, we'll talk about crafting pre-production materials, and we'll discuss how to conduct meaningful pre-interviews. We'll also talk all about planning the shoot itself. It's a lot of work getting ready to shoot a film about real people, events, and concepts, so you want to be sure you spend the time to do it right. So, let's begin our documentary making journey with documentary video, planning, and pre-production.
