What is RSS?

- You've heard me mention RSS a few times in this course. RSS is Real Simple Syndication. And it's technology that dates back to some of the first days of the Internet. In fact it was back in 1999, and tied to Netscape, which was one of the first web browsers, and it allowed people to get easy updates of content that was new. With RSS, real simple syndication, it's a type of technology that allows us to push out updates to people who want them. It's essentially under the hood, a document written in XML. Which stands for Extensible Markup Language. But don't worry, you don't actually have to know how to code, in order to take advantage of it. Just about every major web platform, from YouTube to Word Press to tons of other things, use RSS under the hood. And if you know how to find it, you can grab it, rewrap it, and repurpose it, to get your content out to even more places. We refer to this RSS listing, or directory, as a Feed.
