What clients need vs. what they say they need (hard skills vs. soft skills)

- There's a little bit of psychology involved in figuring out what clients need as opposed to what they say they need. And, I like to think of this as the difference between hard skills and soft skills. So, these are the reasons you think people hire you: for your knowledge, for your expertise, your skills, the equipment you know how to use, the tools you have. Those are all called hard skills, and those are great. There's no question about it. You have to have all of that under your belt. But, I'll tell you why I think people actually hire you, and those are what we call soft skills: attitude, your ability to problem solve, your communication skills, your ability to analyze a situation, your ability to work on a team, and your good judgment. These are all soft skills that we actually call brand value. So, when you're marketing yourself, be sure that you're promoting these soft skills as well as your hard skills.
