What gear do you need to bring on your location scout?

- Location scouting has gotten so much easier. The main tool that you can bring with you is your smartphone. The main thing you're going to do with your smartphone is take photos. We're first going to visualize the physical space. We're going to take pictures so we see the ceiling height, the windows, the floors, the lighting, the colors of the wall, how we're going to access the facility. I'm going to take pictures of the loading dock. Not only will these pictures help me make a plan, I can also give them to my PAs or DP or whoever's loading in the gear in their call sheets so then they know what they're looking for. You're also going to take some pre-visualizing shots. These are shots that'll help you kind of start defining the creative shots that you're going to take in that location. You can same depth of field to hide the background. Maybe a background will be out of focus. You could start checking requirements for camera placement. You can make sure you have room to put your camera down somewhere. This is also going to give you an idea of the lighting quality that's already there in the establishment, so then the DP can look and see what extra lighting elements they need to bring for the scene. Here's some apps I've used in the past, but you can also search in the Google Play Store or the App Store. And for production apps, and there are so many out there to help you visualize the space. So, here's an example. I used Panascout, and I took a photo, and I kind of dialed in the camera settings that we were thinking about using. And if you look at the next shot, here's the actual shot that we took. Looks pretty close, doesn't it? By using these apps and going and taking this photo, I realized that this would be a perfect spot for what we were looking for for our shoot.
