- Welcome to the chapter on growing your business. This is the fun part. So let's start with some things you need to know about the difference between marketing and sales. You're gonna have to do both as a freelancer. Marketing is strategy, sales is tactics. Marketing is differentiating yourself from others who are doing the same thing. Sales is pitching yourself to that actual customer. Marketing makes sure that you're top of mind, so when a project comes up, people are thinking about you. Sales is you actually knocking on that door and making sure that they're shaking your hand and making that deal with you. One of the things you do in marketing is you make sure that you're developing marketing segments, so you might have email lists that go to certain kinds of people.
