- The decision to hire someone into a staff position is often a difficult one. As a small business owner, this can add to a lot of stress as you look to the payroll and how much you're paying out each month. You often think about the flexibility of being able to expand or contract as needed. But hiring staff does have some significant benefits and can add great consistency to your project team. There are a lot of issues to consider, though. One of the things that I always point out is look to how often you are hiring a freelance position. Not the individual freelancer, but is there a position you're hiring often. For example, I've seen a lot of post-production places or companies that need video editors rely almost entirely on freelance talent, yet those edit suites are filled every single day with different people.
