- You've heard me mention an accountant before, and if you don't have one, bottom line, you likely need one. This might be somebody that is internal to your company, who can evaluate things and give you advice about the money you're spending. But more likely, you're an independent contractor or a small company yourself. Having an accountant is critical, because they can really help you out. Most creative people are challenged when it comes to the financial items. They don't understand tax laws, and they don't understand what they should or shouldn't be doing. Oftentimes, they don't take deductions that they should be allowed to take. And other times, there's things they think that they don't need to pay taxes on when they do. I can tell you that finding yourself with a large tax bill can be very stressful, but equally so, giving a bunch of money away in taxes just to get a refund later isn't a good idea either,…
