The departments of a VFX company

- The larger the visual effects company is the more structured it usually is. If you're working in a small boutique studio with only a handful of artists, you might be expected to be able to do a wide range of tasks. But as companies get larger they tend to become more departmentalized with specific tasks always assigned to a specific group of artists. This departmentalization makes it easier for production to schedule work and hire the correct people. It also allows artists in each department to concentrate on just the specific role assigned to them. It can be a little inflexible, but for large companies working on large projects the benefit of an organized department-based approach outweighs the reduced flexibility. The departments are generally divided up based on the steps I outlined earlier in the course. But let's look at each department in a little more detail.
