- Why is the only button on an error message OK when things are obviously not okay? When you stop and think about it, all an error message does is tells you something about something bad that happened that you have no chance to fix. Your word processor just crashed and lost the last two hours of your work. Okay. So why are you being told about it in the first place? The answer is most of the time, the error message is either there to help developers to debug the issue or is an excuse for why the app isn't working the way it should be. But, as interface designers, you can do something to improve on the situation. It's really simple. Just refuse to use error messages. I'm not saying you shouldn't use modal dialog boxes. What I mean is rather than error messages with just an OK button, you should create meaningful messages that explain the situation, the solution, and how to get there.
