- There's some truth in the saying, "It's not what you know, it's who you know." Each of the jobs I've got has been due in part to either a referral or recommendation, or knowing somebody inside the organization. To be honest, I think I'd rewrite that saying to, "Who you know matters before what you know," because you still have to be able to demonstrate that you can do the job, and nobody's going to want to refer you if you're obviously underqualified. But still, it's worth having a network of people who you can draw from to help you learn about openings, give you insight into the company culture, so you can decide whether you're interested, and even help you through the application process. That doesn't happen overnight. Just connecting with everybody you've ever met, And many people you haven't, isn't a recipe for success. If you do that, you'll form a large network of very weak links.
