Designing with empathy

- With only general UX best practices as a guide, an interaction designer could create interactive mock-ups, wireframes, and prototypes. And a visual designer can apply an attractive look and feel that applies the best practices for colors, typography, and space. Yet as you know, while best practices are a great place to start, they are never enough. The critical intermediary step is to understand who the users are and what they need. This is of course where user research comes in. In some contexts, that may be enough. A designer applies appropriate findings and produces the designs needed to create a website or app. Maybe there's another iteration or two with some usability testing inserted in the process, and that's it. The design is launched. The product is a success sometimes. But many times it takes more than that. While UX does often have a seat at the table, it's one seat of many.
