- April 15th. For those of you who live or work in the United States, all I have to do is mention that date and you'll know exactly what I'm referring to, it's tax day. The day that your federal and often state tax returns are due, as are any necessary payments. I'll admit that I'm the son of a CPA who bought me an old school paper ledger when I was a kid to keep track of my allowance in proper accounting fashion. So I've always been a bit intrigued by accounting. But for many people, it's a stressful time with rules that are overly complex and unnecessarily convoluted. This is true at the federal level, and this is true at the state level, too. Many years ago, one of my clients recognized this frustration at the state level, both with the administration of messy legacy systems, and by the users, the taxpayers in each state that had to interact with those systems.
