How empathy relates to UX

- Empathy means experiencing the actual feelings of others and compassion is the understanding of other's pain, such that we aim to reduce or eliminate that pain. As a UX professional, you were hired for your compassion. Maybe you were brought on to gather and understand pain points. That's the domain of user research. Or maybe you use your understanding to alleviate those pain points. That's design. So regardless of the specific areas of expertise, UX professionals absolutely have to have compassion. But it's also important to have empathy as a UX professional too. To some extent, you need to be able to feel what others have felt and will feel when using existing products. You first do your best to filter out your biases and assumptions and try to pull away from your own thoughts and feelings as the center of your attention.
