Involve stakeholders in research
- When I started out as a user researcher in the '90s, user research was often done like it was a science experiment. The research was conducted in a controlled environment. Either a lab, or a rented room that was carefully set up to make sure things went exactly as planned. Occasionally, stakeholders would observe through one-way glass. But often, the request was instead for findings to only be communicated through a formal written research report- lengthy and wordy. Thankfully, things have changed. And more importantly, it's much easier to now acknowledge how valuable stakeholder involvement is. If a stakeholder absolutely wants to throw something over the fence and have me come back with the results, of course I'll do that. But given the option, I'd start by involving stakeholders in the research planning. Whatever kind of moderated qualitative research I'm doing, I get their input into the recruitment screener…
