Managing emotional research
- While emotional research situations may catch you by surprise. There are some things you can do to prevent emotion-based problems or salvage sessions that may feel like their going off the rails. First, provide participants with a consent form that clearly explains what the research is going to be about and how long it's going to last. In addition, I often add text like, "I understand that my participation is completely voluntary and that I may withdraw my consent and discontinue my participation at any time." If you encounter a participant who does want to discontinue for whatever reason, absolutely let them leave and give them their incentive, regardless. As a verbal introduction in usability testing scripts, I'll emphasize that no way is the study a test of their knowledge, but rather a way of telling me what could be improved.
