- Empathy maps, journey maps, experience maps, and service blueprints are the most commonly used mapping tools within a UXer's repertoire. There are also some non-UX-specific tools and techniques with very similar names that you might come across in your work. Here are a few of the most common. Storymapping is the more general term for using classic narrative structure as a tool to help visualize and communicate ideas. You can use storymapping to describe things like the overall value of a product or experience, the specific steps someone takes through the product, or how they come to use the product. The point is to use the well-established sequence of events that make up a story in the context of a product. Very generally, a story always follows the same structure, with a beginning, middle, and end, where context is set, action builds, and then some sort of resolution is reached.
