What is a card sort?
- The way you lay out the information on your site or in your app, can make the difference between confused and happy users. What items should be visible at the top level? How should navigation menus be grouped? Should the site map be organized by functions or concepts? As with most design problems, users can't directly give you good answers to these questions. However, gathering information through a card sort can tell you a lot about the way they think about the world. Card sorting got its name because in the bad old days, we used to ask participants to stack physical index cards into groups. Each card would have a task on it that users could perform on the site, the way they grouped those tasks would tell us how they thought about the features or content on the site.
