What is a cognitive walkthrough?
- If you don't have the time or budget for usability testing, but you need some quick reassurance that you're on the right track, try a cognitive walkthrough. A cognitive walkthrough helps you work out whether you're interface tells a story that users will understand. As a team, you choose a section of your interface and walk through each step that users must take. As you go, you ask two questions: Will users know what to do at this step? And if they do the right thing, will they know they did it? There's a good reason for both these questions. The first one helps you work out whether your interface flows logically from a user perspective, with no unusual terminology and no confusing controls. The second is a feedback question: Will users see a change on this screen or an indication on the next screen that makes them confident that they're progressing towards their goal?
