- [Instructor] When I started working in software development over 25 years ago, there was a job role called Technical Writer. This was the poor person who had to create an instruction manual for the software at the last minute after it was too late to change anything in the product. The irony of that job name is that people writing the words that appear in user interfaces and help systems are trying to be anything but technical. They're trying to explain technical terms in the most appropriate way for people who'll be using the system. The term technical writer was replaced by user assistance. Once we had help systems that integrated with our software the team needed someone to write explanations of how each feature should be used. The mismatch there is that while developers think in terms of features, users think in terms of tasks. Rather than explaining how a feature works, user assistance professionals try to write content…
