What are reliability and validity in user research?

- [Instructor] How can you judge the quality of a piece of user research? How can you know whether the results are trustable? That's where reliability and validity come in. In user research, a reliable study is one where you get consistent results. If you asked your research question again, you'd get the same answer. A valid study measures what you claim to measure. The answer has to be believable and realistic. Let's say you're researching people's commute to work so that you can build an app to make the journey easier. You need to be sure that your research properly describes commuters' behaviors so that when you build your app and release it to a large audience, those people find the app useful because their behaviors are similar to the people you observed for your research. That's what we mean by reliable data. If you didn't see a full range of commuter behaviors in your research, your data won't be reliable. You…
