What is a satisfaction survey?
- Usability research boils down to measuring three kinds of things, efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction. Efficiency is how long a task takes and how few errors people make that they have to correct. It's pretty easy to get hard numbers for those measures. Effectiveness is how close people get to their goal. Did they achieve what they set out to achieve? We can look at the accuracy of the output to measure this. Satisfaction is how people feel about the process they went through. Was it harder or easier than it could've been? Did they end up happy with the result? What would they change if they could? What parts were truly delightful? Measuring satisfaction is harder. We can't reach into people's heads and extract an objective measure of satisfaction. Satisfaction is attitudinal rather than behavioral. Instead of just observing, we have to ask. That's where satisfaction surveys come in.
