- [Instructor] Internet Protocol Version 6 was developed several years ago to provide things that IP Version 4 just couldn't. Near the top of that list is providing enough addresses for everything we need to stay connected. IP Version 4 provides for about 4.3 billion addresses. Some are reserved for special use, so there are actually a bit less. IP Version 6 provides for a few octillian each. For everyone on the planet. To accomplish this, the format had to change. Instead of an IP address being shown as four numbers, less than 255, separated by dots, IP Version 6 displays as eight groups of four-digit hexadecimal numbers separated by colons. We went from a 32-bit address to 128-bit address. This gives us some new abilities, and it does take away at least one as well. So an IP Version 6 address might look a little something like this.
