- So file sharing in Windows Server 2012. Largely if you understand file and folder permissions, NTFS permissions, file sharing is pretty trivial. It's pretty straight forward with one caveat, one special thing you want to know about. I'm going to show you a little bit of everything, but a lot of that one special bit. Creating a file share is actually pretty darn easy in Windows Server 2012. It's one of the very, very few things that's on by default, and I don't say that lightly. There's very little that's actually on by default in Windows Server 2012, but this thing is. It's almost trivial to create a file share, or shared folder. Depending on what part of the documentation, or what part of the interface you're looking at when you do it, it's either called a shared folder or a file share.
