GRE tunneling

- [Instructor] Generic Routing Encapsulation or GRE is a tunneling protocol that was developed years ago by Cisco Systems and it can encapsulate a variety of network protocols inside virtual point-to-point links over an internet protocol network. It's very similar to VPN but without any of the encryption or security. It's mainly used in software defined networks internally where security may not be an issue. However, since security should always be an issue, this has made GRE tunneling by itself to not be used quite as often as it once was. However, GRE with encryption using VPN is very much alive and used. In Windows Server 2019, Microsoft has added more speed to GRE tunneling and VPN. In 2016, the VPN speed was 300 megabits per second and GRE capped out at two gigabits per second. In 2019, the speed has jumped to 1.8 gigabits per second for VPN and 15 gigabits per second for GRE. It can be utilized in an SDN network by allowing you to change the host a VM is located and move it to…
