Install File Server Resource Manager

- [Instructor] Data is a core component of your server infrastructure, and in most situations you'll have file servers, which will be used to hold the data that your users and programs will use. Well here I want to introduce you to something called the File Server Resource Manager, which is a set of tools that allows you to understand, control, and manage the quantity and types of data that is stored out on your servers. So to show you how to install the File Server Resource Manager, we need to connect to one of our systems, and I'm going to connect to a system I have here called LH-SVR-1, which is simply a member server in my domain. Here in the server manager, if we want to install the File Server Resource Manager, it is a role, so we need to select add roles and feature. This will take us into the add roles and features wizard. Here's your typical before you begin screen that just tells you, hey you're about to do something significant. Make sure you have everything from a security stand point in place, we do, so I'll click next. It is a roll-based installation, so I'll click next again. I am installing on this server, so next one more time. And now I get to the actual roles. Now if you look at the list, you'll notice you do not see File Server Resource Manager. What we do have here is file and storage services. So I'm going to expand that, and then inside of there, you'll see we have something called File and iSCSI Services, so I'll expand that, and now we find the File Server Resource Manager. So, I will check the box, and when I do I get a little message saying hey there's some other features that go along with this and I'll say okay, add those features. Click next, here I can choose additional features if there are any other I want to add. I don't at this time, so I'll click next, and at this point, I always do this even though there shouldn't be a reboot needed. I check the box saying reboot if necessary. I get a little warning saying someone might be connected. Click yes and install. At this point the system will take a few minutes to go through and install the role. So, if you are following along, what you can do at this point is go ahead and pause the video and resume once this process is finished, cause I'm going to speed it up on my end. All right, installation has succeeded. So at this point I can close the wizard, and pretty much the only thing I need to do to confirm that the installation truly did work is go up to the tools menu, and you'll see here I now have File Server Resource Manager, and if I select it, you'll notice that it opens up and this is where we now see the series of tools that are part of this File Server Resource Manager to help us manage and maintain our data.
