Managing Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO)
In Active Directory domain services all domain controllers are pretty much equal in the sense that we work in a mutli-master replication topology and any domain controller has the ability to perform, pretty much, the actions that any other domain controller can perform. But there are certain components of the database and certain actions in which we need to designate a single master, meaning one domain controller who is the master of that operation. But that one master can be changed from one domain controller to another which is why we call it a flexible single master of operation. What I want to show you here is how we can go ahead and transfer, or if necessary, even seize that master role from one server to another when we need to make a change. To demonstrate this, I'm going to go onto one of our domain controllers called DC2.
