- [Instructor] In Chapter One, I made the comment that upgrading a server was not a preferred option. There are two reasons for this. One is that the server you have was likely purchased with the previous operating system in mind, and some hardware might not be appropriate for the new editions of Server. The other reason is that the old server has accumulated a bit of history that could prove problematic when the new version of server is installed, or at best, it's clutter. The old server did, however, provide a meaningful service on the network, and you may want to have that service running just as it is, but on a clean installation of Server 2016. Enter role migration. What this feature does is install a role on a new server, with all of the configuration that it had on a previous one. In this demonstration, we have a DHCP server that has been working quite well in our domain for a few years, on a Windows 2012 R2 Server.
