Overview of Event Viewer

- [Instructor] In the last two chapters, we've looked at two very different monitoring tools. The performance monitor is a great tool for looking at quantitative data, good for gathering statistical information about how the server is working. Microsoft's message analyzer is ideal for gathering large amount of detail about all communication happening inside or outside the server. In this chapter, we're going to focus on the event viewer. The strength of the event viewer is its simplicity. Sometimes you need statistics over a long period of time. Sometimes you need a lot of detail about what's going on right now, but sometimes you just need a list of what's working and what's not, and that's what the event viewer provides. Like many applications, the event viewer can be launched several different ways. Here we are on the same Windows 2016 server that we've been using for most of this course.
