- [Instructor] The network controller is the core of a software defined network. It sits between network devices at one end of the network and applications at the other. Any communication between applications and the network devices must go through the controller. The controller communicates with applications, such as software firewalls or load balancers, using the northbound interfaces. A big part of software defined networking and certification testing has to do with which direction the data is moving. In the northbound interface, we talk about traffic to the internet and to other computers in your network. North data flow is used by network controllers to communicate with your LAN, WAN, and the internet. This is the majority of your network communication and covers connectivity between your servers and your clients.
