From the course: Server Administration Essential Training

Server installation

- [Instructor] So what exactly is it that makes a computer be a server? When you are looking to buy a server, you may find vendors who are saying, "Oh, buy this server computer." Well, that just means that it's computer hardware that is designed for a server operating system to be installed on it and to operate as a server and in fact, you could get that operating system installed as part of the purchase of the computer itself but if you didn't and you want to install your own, you should know how to do it. Now, as I mentioned at the beginning of the course, there are many different server operating system choices that are out there and I'm going to demonstrate how to install Windows Server 2019. So here on the screen, we are looking at my Hyper-V Manager, we'll talk about virtualization later, but I have a virtual machine that's created, it's just called Windows Server and I'm going to go into it and you'll see that this machine is often known as a bare metal machine. Meaning it's as though I just bought a computer and it has nothing on it, just brand new nothing's been installed. The only thing I've done to this machine, just so you know, is I've emulated because this is virtualization. I've emulated that I've put a server 2019 DVD, into a DVD drive, okay? So I'm going to go ahead and click on start. Now this is going to happen very quickly. I mean, it says press any key and I pressed the key on the keyboard and that's how I boot into the actual DVD on this virtual machine. All right, now I apologize, the resolution is going to get a little weird here 'cause it's a virtual machine but you can see here it takes me into the windows setup window. So here's Windows Server 2019. I need to pick what language, time and currency format and keyboard or input method and so, because I'm in the US and speak English I'm going to take all the defaults and click next and then it jumps right into a button that says install now. So I'll click that button and I will mention while we're waiting here for just a moment that what you're going to find is that while I happen to be going step-by-step through this to show you how to install Windows Server 2019 Microsoft and pretty much every vendor out there has made this. so super simple to be able to go ahead and do. All right, so here you can see here that it's asking me what version I want to do and once you to notice that it says evaluation cause this is an evaluation copy and I did this specifically because you also may not have an actual license copy. If you want to follow along you can download the evaluation copy. You have a choice between either standard or data center and you have it with the desktop experience or without the desktop experience. Well, let's go for the full thing. I'm going to select data center with desktop experience. So that's everything. So I'll click on next. Here I get the license terms. So you can read through it if you like, but most importantly you need to check a box saying you accept the license terms. All vendors will have some form of license terms so I'll click next. I need you to choose what kind of installation it is. If I was upgrading from a previous version I could click upgrade, but I'm not. It's a new install. So it's actually custom so I will click on that. I need you to select what hard drive I want to put it on. I have a 200 gig hard drive that's been created here. I will go ahead and use the whole hard drive. So click next and it begins the installation process. Now I will tell you that this process does take some time and so through the magic of editing, I'm going to actually speed this along. So if you're following along and doing this with me go ahead and pause the recording and then resume when this process finishes and I will warn you, by the way it will involve a reboot or two. Okay so my system has finished installing and has rebooted and here we are sitting at a customized settings screen where it basically says, you need to set up a password for the first built in account, right? You have to have at least this one account and that's the administrator account. So I'm going to go ahead and put in a super secure secret password here and you got to put it in twice, make sure it matches and you can't really see it 'cause like I said, my screen the resolution is a little wonky until it's done installing but if I scroll down a little bit there is a finish button. So I'm going to click on finish and it finalizes my settings. This is where I actually can fix the resolution. This is just a virtualization thing and connect and now it jumps to a full screen here and I have my administrator account. So I will put in my super secure password once again and enter that and at this point the operating system has been installed and now I'm just logging in for the first time and in the case of Windows Server 2019 what's going to happen is other than this network question that comes up, I'll just click yes to that and just ignore that. It takes you into the server manager which is something we'll talk about in another video. So that's how you install Windows Server 2019.
