- [Instructor] You can connect to a remote computer through a local network. Here are two computers on a local network. I can use the remote desktop client from, say, the laptop to connect to the office PC. You can connect to a remote computer on a corporate network through a VPN if you have the required credentials. Here's my company's VPN, and all I have to do is click connect. But what if you want to connect to a computer you own that's in your house and it's sitting behind a router from somewhere else, like a hotel? Well, that's a bit more complicated. By default, a router, like the one you have at home, doesn't allow remote connections to your private network from the outside. That's because it's a security risk and will leave your network vulnerable to hackers and malware. So if you want to access a computer on your home network from, say, your office or vacation home, you must configure the router so that it will allow the incoming connection.
