Introduction to remote troubleshooting

- [Instructor] Remote troubleshooting is a valuable skill to have and can make you gainfully employed. That's because more employees and students are working from home instead of offices and schools. This appears to be a permanent change according to many experts. Companies found that they have happier employees and, even in many cases, even more productive employees due to being in a friendly environment and having no commute time. Fixing connectivity remotely can be much more challenging than onsite due to proximity issues. But I hope to show you the most common issues can be fixed remotely with some proactive planning. I will be focusing on several areas of remote troubleshooting in this course. This is based on decades of experience and many poll responses by system administrators. They include Windows and Macintosh computers. Various remote control techniques will be discussed as we need to gain control of our clients' computers in order to troubleshoot issues. We'll also look at wireless problems. Most home users are no longer using wired connections. They may be moving around the house or in a spot that doesn't normally have them. Client VPNs are still very popular, even though companies have been using them since around 2000 in the dial-up days. Encryption, speed, and stability have gotten better but issues still abound. Home users now have firewalls on their computers as well as one provided by their work or internet service provider. Understanding port security and how to open ports both at the office and at home is crucial to connectivity. Printing is the number one problem with remote users. Printers have very low-grade network processing equipment in them and that keeps their costs low but it can cause many IT headaches trying to make them work with remote servers and even local printing. Video conferencing with companies like Zoom and Microsoft teams are used daily by students and employees alike. This is in lieu of having face-to-face meetings. And there's many issues with sound and video quality that needs to be fixed. Security is the number one priority for IT administrators because without it nothing else really matters. We will delve into what you should be concerned about with your users when it comes to securely connecting to the office. There will be many topics, tips, and tutorials on how to remotely troubleshoot your users' technology in this course. Let's get started on how to do just that.
